The NATO airfield Hohn is a military airfield of the air force of the German armed forces . The airfield is located in Schleswig-Holstein in the municipality of Hohn near Rendsburg . The Lufttransportgeschwader 63 uses the air base for its operations. The squadron is formally stationed in the Hugo Junkers barracks in nearby Alt Duvenstedt . The GFD GmbH has its headquarters or also operates aircraft on this air base.
history
Construction of the airfield began in 1938 with the help of the Reich Labor Service and the Air Force Construction Battalion. The first construction phase was completed in 1940. The further expansion was mainly carried out by Soviet prisoners of war , but could not be completed by the end of the war, only the main runway, which runs in an east-west direction, was completed. A second runway was under construction and a third one is being planned.
After the war, the airfield was taken over by the Royal Air Force and demilitarized until April 1946. The Lufttransportgeschwader 63 (LTG 63) has been stationed at Hohn airfield since 1967. As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , it was decided that the air base should be closed by the end of 2018 and that LTG 63 should be dissolved. In December 2015, the Federal Ministry of Defense decided , due to the operational readiness of the Airbus A400M in tactical air transport, which could not be achieved by 2018, to use the Transall C-160 at the Hohn site until 2021 and to close the site only in mid-2022. In December 2019, the Bundeswehr decided to continue using the site with its almost 650 soldiers and more than 80 civilian employees. How many posts will be retained in the future is still unclear (as of December 2019). The air base is also used civilly. According to the CDU member of the Bundestag and defense expert Johann Wadephul , Airbus is said to have announced that it will set up a service center for unmanned aerial vehicles there in the future. In addition, Hohn is to be retained as an alternate airfield for the air force squadrons stationed in the north.
