Raúl Brandão

Raul Germano Brandão (born March 12, 1867 in Foz do Douro , Portugal , † December 5, 1930 in Lisbon , Portugal) was a Portuguese writer . His work is characterized above all by the depiction of the simple and meager life in Portugal, especially that of the farmers and fishermen.

Life

Brandão was the son of a fisherman, hence his interest in subjects of the simple rural population in Portugal. He started studying in Porto , but dropped out and joined the army. In 1890 his first book “Impressões e Paisagens” (Impressions and Landscapes) was published.

In 1896 Brandão was transferred to Guimarães to the 20th Infantry Regiment, where he met his future wife. They married the following year and built a house in the nearby town of Nespereira . There they led a rather withdrawn life, interrupted by a few longer stays in Lisbon and other places. In 1924 he visited the Azores, which were still little known at the time, and then published in 1926 the work “As ilhas desconhecidas - Notas e paisagens” (The Unknown Islands - Notes and Landscapes). This book had a lasting impact on the image of the Azores in Europe. After he left the army in 1912, his most fruitful creative period began.

Brandão's work includes memoirs (three volumes, 1919, 1925, 1933), novels , plays and travelogues, and a children's book . He also wrote many articles for various newspapers. His plays have been performed on the stages in Lisbon. The only work that has been translated into German is the 1923 novel “Die Fischer”.

The main themes of his work are death and the isolation of people, combined with pantheism so typical of Portugal . It also describes the threatened worlds of the fishermen, farmers and ordinary people, whose chronicler he saw himself.
