Weisstannen is a village in the Weisstannental in the municipality of Mels in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .
history
Around 1300 the first Walser from Davos and the Rheinwald settled in the Weisstannental . The local community Weisstannen was founded in 1523. The valley was already densely populated by 1500. The common land had to be protected and reserved for the “home cows” and the area at the alp had to be increased. Weisstannen therefore introduced community regulations in 1523 and immediately had its own authority. The first church was built in 1485 in the village of Weisstannen. It was replaced by a new building in 1665. The current shape of the church was created after an expansion in 1828.
