José Augusto Moreira do Nascimento (born September 19, 1947 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film director and film editor .

life and work

He graduated from high school in Oeiras and already worked as a teenager in the Rádio Clube Português (today Rádio Comercial ). Since the early 1970s he worked a. a. for the television programs "Ensaio" and "Impacto" of the RTP . He was an assistant u. a. for António-Pedro Vasconcelos in "Perdido por Cem" (1973) and for Fernando Matos Silva in "O Mal Amado" (1972), later also for Raúl Ruiz ("O Território" 1981). After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 he was one of the founding members of the experimental film cooperative Cinequipa . He continued to work for the RTP , u. a. in collaboration with literary figures like Alexandre O'Neill or Àlvaro Guerra e Alface . Here he shot emancipatory programs like "Nome: Mulher" ("Name: Woman") or "Ver e Pensar" ("Seeing and Thinking"), in 1981 also a documentary for the 50th anniversary of Manoel de Oliveira's directing . Between 1974 and 1978 he had previously made a number of committed documentaries about the social changes after the revolution, including a. for the Cinequipa , which he left in 1976. For a number of films, including a. "O Bobo" by José Álvaro Morais and "Aqui na Terra" by João Botelho , he took over the editing for the next few years . From 1981 to 1987 he taught "editing" at the Lisbon Film School of the National Conservatory ( Escola Superior de Cinema do Conservatório Nacional , today ESTC ). In the dissolution phase of the Novo Cinema , Nascimento belonged to the faction that opted for an audience-oriented film.

In 1986 he made his first feature film. "Repórter X" shows the life of Reinaldo Ferreira (1897-1935), a now well-known director and journalist of the 20's, the few, turned then still unusual detective comedies, and his newspaper reports with reporters X signed. After a few documentaries and the television magazine "TV Arte" all about the visual arts , Nascimento only made his second full feature film in 2000. "Tarde Demais" is based on a true story and tells the story of four men in an overturned fishing boat in the wide Tejo river delta . The atmospherically and psychologically intensive film shows the struggle for survival of men against freezing and drowning, with the inaccessible metropolis of Lisbon in mind. The film won over audiences and critics alike, both with its exciting plot and the metaphor of a modern city that does not see human suffering a few meters in front of its nose.

During the European Film Week in Covilhã ( Semana de Cinema Europeu da Covilhã ) and the European Film Festival of Angra do Heroísmo , he led various short film workshops . For the film school of the University of Beira Interior (Covilhã) he occasionally leads seminars and workshops.

Nascimento also appeared as an actor, but did not personally emphasize this side of the cinema, and mostly limited himself to supporting roles. Accordingly, he has remained inconspicuous in his work as an actor.
