Fernando Vieira Lisboa Vendrell Henriques (born October 28, 1962 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film director and producer .

Life

He studied agriculture and psychology before studying at ESTC ( Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema ), which he graduated in 1985. He was subsequently assistant director a. a. for Manoel de Oliveira , Margarida Gil , João Canijo , José Fonseca e Costa , Eduardo Geada and Manuel Mozos . For the production company Animatógrafo of António da Cunha Telles , he produced several films, and worked for foreign productions in Portugal.

In 1992 he founded the production company "David & Golias" with Luís Alvarães , for which he shot his first film in 1998 and which between 1996 and 1999 delivered a number of theater productions for television.

It is especially his African films that made him famous. His debut Fintar o Destino (dt. About: The dribble of fate) from 1998 is based on a true story of a football player in the football-loving Cape Verde , who as an adult regrets having turned down the offer as a young man to be a professional player at Benfica Lisbon and because of that he will travel to Lisbon. The film was highlighted in the Panorama section of the 1998 Berlinale and attracted international criticism. His film O Gotejar da Luz (Eng .: The trickling of light), based on the story of the same name by Leite de Vasconcelos , is also set in Africa ( Mozambique ). Vendrell also worked on the script for the award-winning Angolan-Portuguese film O Herói (Eng: The Hero), which he also produced, and Angola also played an important role in his own 2006 film Pele (Eng: Skin)
