João Manuel Altavilla Canijo (born December 10, 1957 in Porto ) is a Portuguese film director .

Live and act

Between 1977 and 1980 he studied history at the University of Porto , then turned to cinema. He worked for seven years as an assistant director, for example for Manoel de Oliveira ( Francisca 1980, Mon Cas 1986), Wim Wenders ( Der Stand der Dinge 1981), Alain Tanner ( In der Weisse Stadt 1982), Werner Schroeter ( Der Rosenkönig 1984) and Paulo Rocha ( O Desejado 1987).

He made his first own short film in 1983. His first full-length feature film was Trés menos eu from 1988, which screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam that same year.

In 1987 he staged for the first time at the theater (a play by Edward A. Whitehead, under the name Jogos de Praia (beach games) together with Diogo Dória in the Galeria Monumental , Lisbon ). In the following years he brought plays on the stage several times, for example by David Mamet or Eugene O'Neill .

He was executive producer on Wim Wenders' film for the European Capital of Culture Lisbon, Lisbon Story (1994).

With Ganhar a vida ( Earning Life ) he deals with the reality of Portuguese guest workers in the Parisian suburbs and is now attracting international criticism, e.g. B. at the Cannes Film Festival .

His film Noite Escura ( Dark Night ) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was a nominee for an Oscar / Best Foreign Language Film .

For his last film Sangue do meu Sangue ( Blood of My Blood ) he won the FIPRESCI Prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival .

Almost all of his films were produced by Paulo Branco .
