Paulo Rocha (director)

Paulo Soares da Rocha (born December 22, 1935 in Porto , † December 29, 2012 in Vila Nova de Gaia ) was a Portuguese film director .

Career

During his law studies in Lisbon , he was active in film clubs . From 1959 to 1961 he lived in Paris , where he graduated from the IDHEC film school with a degree in directing. He worked with Jean Renoir at Le caporal épinglé ("The Corporal in the Sling", 1962) and with Manoel de Oliveira at Acto da Primavera (1963).

With his first film Os Verdes Anos ("The Green Years") he presented the first work of the emerging Novo Cinema in 1963 , produced by António da Cunha Telles , with music by Carlos Paredes and with Rui Gomes , Isabel Ruth and Ruy Furtado in the Leading roles. The film won u. a. the award for the best first film at the Locarno Film Festival .

Rocha was co-founder of the Centro Português de Cinema in 1969 , which he chaired in 1973/1974. From 1975 to 1983 he lived in Japan , where he a. a. Was cultural attaché at the Portuguese embassy.
