Os Verdes Anos (German: "The Green Years". Title in the GDR : "The Young Years") is a major work in the New Portuguese Film by director Paulo Rocha from 1963.

action

19-year-old Júlio comes from the countryside to the big city and begins a relationship with Ilda, who is of the same age. Unable to find their way in modern society, plagued by distrust and disappointment, Julio's relationship with Ilda ends dramatically.

reception

The plot is not told here as a simple melodrama, but as a story that shows modernity and its problems. Júlio came to the city for economic reasons. But it turns out to be inhuman to him, and in the end he succumbs to the threatening and impersonal modernity, represented by cars on the street that surround him and illuminate him, after his fatal short-circuiting act.

The film was also seen by film critics as an indictment of the Estado Novo regime. He portrays the good-natured Portuguese Júlio with traditional values and a narrow view of the world, who, unprepared and against the course of history, caught off guard by the inexorable onset of modernity, wants to flee back to his small rural world. He does not succeed in this even at the cost of happiness in life and even human life. The depicted compulsions, both emigration for economic reasons, as well as the inevitable military service in the outbreak of the Portuguese colonial war , and the depicted exploitation of modern workers (Sunday work, for example) were seen as indirectly depicted criticism.

The new view of the camera, which shows the movements and looks exactly, plus the special speed of the cut and the realistic, three-dimensional shots also technically differentiated the film from previous works in Portuguese cinema. After the Portuguese film had moved more and more away from the everyday reality of the Portuguese since the late 1940s, this was for the first time a cinema that was in harmony with the actual situation in the country. Even if Manoel de Oliveira's Acto da Primavera (filmed since 1959 and published in 1963) is considered a forerunner, the international criticism sees Os Verdes Anos as the first work of the new Portuguese film, the Novo Cinema .

The film music by Carlos Paredes , who played contemporary sounds on the traditional Portuguese guitar , contributed significantly to the success of the film due to its sensitive composition and at the same time soulful and clear presentation, and became popular itself.

The film won the Silver Sails at the Locarno Film Festival in 1964, a prize at the 1965 Acapulco Film Festival , and an honorary nomination at the Valladolid Film Festival in 1965.
