Antonio da Cunha Telles

António Cohen da Cunha Telles (born February 26, 1935 in Funchal , Madeira ) is a Portuguese film director and producer .

Life

Cunha Telles first studied medicine in Lisbon , but then went to Paris . He lived there from 1956 to 1961 and completed a degree as a director at the IDHEC film school . In 1962 he started producing films. He is one of the founders of the Centro Português de Cinema and one of the main characters of the new Portuguese film, the Novo Cinema . He has also produced two of Novo Cinema's key films, Verdes Anos by Paulo Rocha and Belarmino by Fernando Lopes . To date he has produced or co-produced around 200 films, mainly in France and Portugal.

As a director he celebrated success with his 1969 film O Cerco ; the film ran successfully at the Cannes Film Festival and subsequently received approval from both audiences and critics, in France and Portugal. He made six other films between 1974 and 2004, but they didn't leave a big impression on the critics.
