occupation

Belarmino is a black and white Portuguese film from 1964.

action

The semi-documentary film accompanies the formerly successful boxer Belarmino Fragoso (1931–1982) through Lisbon and provides insights into his everyday life. His brother pretended to be him in London and lost a fight. To eradicate this shame, Belarmino trained again for a revenge. But he lost the fight. This is the hook of the film, and Belarmino tells his story in the film itself.

reception

The film was in 1964, after Os Verdes Anos (1963) by Paulo Rocha , the second groundbreaking film by Novo Cinema . Belarmino's statements, some of which were recorded in the cafés of the slowly dying Lisbon bohemians of the 1960s, alternate with Belarmino's pictures showing him fighting and training, but also coloring pictures with which he laboriously makes a living. The moments in which the camera accompanies him on walks through a city caught between modern awakening and the narrow Estado Novo dictatorship ensure the rhythm of the film. The aesthetics of the camera, the tense, calm atmosphere, and the matching jazz film music by Manuel Jorge Veloso and the band of the Hot Clube de Portugal were new to Portuguese cinema. The film's socially critical view is evident in the unvarnished pictures of the lively city and the conversations with Belarmino.
