Marco Martins

Marco Martins (* 1972 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film director .

Life

Marco Martins made films with video cameras as a teenager. He later studied at the Lisbon Film School ESTC ( Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema ) . With his thesis, the short film Mergulho no Ano Novo (Upside Down into the New Year) , he won a prize at the Curtas Vila do Conde short film festival . In 1994 he was a production assistant at Lisbon Story directed by Wim Wenders and at Casa de Lava directed by Pedro Costa . In 1995 he assisted Manoel de Oliveira at The Monastery and in 1998 João Canijo at Sapatos Pretos . In 1998 his short film (14 Segundos e um tico,) No caminho para a escola won prizes at the Spanish film festival Festival Ibérico de Cinema in Badajoz (best film, best director) and the Atlantic Axis Prize in Ourense .

His first feature film, Alice, from 2005, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Regards Jeunes Prize. The haunting film, with music by Bernardo Sassetti and starring Nuno Lopes and Beatriz Batarda , shows a young father who, day after day, desperately searches for his daughter, who has been lost in the tumult of Lisbon's lower town . The dark, intense film was a success, both with the Portuguese audience - one of the most watched Portuguese films - and with international critics. For example, leading actor Nuno Lopes, who is more known as a comedian in Portugal, was honored as a Shooting Star at the 2006 Berlinale , and the film won a number of awards, including for “best film” at the Caminhos do Cinema Português in Coimbra, and for “best director “In Las Palmas, the Raindance Film Festival in London and the Argentine Festival Mar del Plata , where he was also awarded a prize for the best photography and a FIPRESCI prize . He was also recognized for best director and best actor at the Globos de Ouro , and he was nominated both as a Portuguese candidate for the Oscar abroad and for the European Fassbinder Prize .

With his Nouvelle Vague- influenced film How to Draw a Perfect Circle , he dealt with the incest taboo in 2009 . The film, dominated by dark tones, with the young actors Joana de Verona and Rafael Morais , and with Beatriz Batarda and Daniel Duval in the leading adult roles, is again dominated by shadows and an oppressive atmosphere. It was not a success with the public and caused discussions among the film audience, also internationally, for example at the Festival of European Films in Kaliningrad, Russia . The film met with some rejection and some praise from international critics.

Martins is also active as a commercial filmmaker and has won various industry awards with his promotional film company Ministério dos Filmes, which he founded in 2002 .
