The Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (ESTC) is the theater and film school of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute . It is the successor to the National Conservatory ( Conservatório Nacional ). The ESTC is divided into the departments of Theater ( Departamento de Teatro ) and Film ( Departamento de Cinema ).

history

The ESCT goes back to the National Conservatory, which in turn went back to the decision of 1836, with which Almeida Garrett was commissioned with the establishment of a national theater and a corresponding theater school. In addition to the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II , the Conservatório Geral de Arte Dramática (“General Conservatory of Theater Arts”), consisting of the theater and lecture school Escola Dramática e de Declamação , the music school Escola de Música , and the dance school Escola de Dança , Mímica e Ginástica especial . The music school Conservatório de Música of Casa Pia , which has existed since 1835, was incorporated into the Escola de Música .

As part of a reform, the name was changed to Conservatório Real de Lisboa (“Royal Conservatory of Lisbon”), while his Escola Dramática e de Declamação was henceforth Escola de Arte de Representar (“School of Performing Arts”). With the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910, the name was changed to Conservatório Nacional . In 1914 the Escola de Arte de Representar received administrative autonomy .

In 1971 an independent film course was set up, which in 1973 received its own school in the National Conservatory with the Escola Piloto para a Formação de Profissionais de Cinema ("First Training School for Film Professions "). This committed itself equally to the technical as well as the creative side of the cinema.

In 1983 it was decided to set up a film and theater college. A set-up commission started work to transform the Escola Piloto para a Formação de Profissionais de Cinema into the ESTC - Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (literally: "College for Theater and Film"). In 1985 the newly created ESTC, which had previously been subordinate to the ministerial Direcção Geral do Ensino Superior ("General Directorate for Higher Education"), was affiliated to the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute (IPL). Until its complete statutes were passed in the government gazette ( Diário da República ) on January 18, 1995, the ESTC remained under the formal direction of the furnishing committee.

In 1998 the ESTC moved from its rooms, which had still been furnished by Almeida Garrett, in the former Convento dos Caetanos monastery (in the municipality of Misericórdia , in downtown Lisbon) to the new building in Amadora . In addition to a wide variety of training rooms, there are also a library, studios, event and demonstration rooms and the canteen.
