Bernardo Sassetti

Bernardo da Costa Sassetti Pais (born June 24, 1970 in Lisbon ; † May 10, 2012 ) was a Portuguese pianist and composer who worked in the fields of jazz , classical music and film music .

Life

Bernardo Sassetti was the great-grandson of the former President Sidónio Pais . He began classical piano training at the age of nine. a. in the "Academia dos Amadores de Música" before he began a music career in 1987 in jazz. He first worked in local clubs (including the Hot Clube de Portugal ) and performed at festivals with Al Gray , John Stubblefield , Frank Lacy and Andy Sheppard . In the 1990s he stayed in London for a while, working with Guy Barker ( Into the Blue , 1995). In 1994 his first album was released under his own name. From the beginning of the 2000s he worked in Lisbon as a composer for film music, as the leader of a trio with the bassist Carlos Barretto and the drummer Alexandre Frazão, and as a soloist and in a duo with the pianist Mário Laginha , with whom he recorded the albums “Mário Laginha / Bernardo Sassetti ”and“ Grândolas ”recorded. Most recently he published his recordings on Clean Feed Records and Trem Azul .

Sassetti has also worked with Conrad Herwig , the Cuban band Sierra Maestra , Carlos Martins / Cindy Blackman , Luís Represas , Carlos do Carmo , Perico Sambeat ("Perico"), Guillermo McGill and Andy Hamilton. In 1999 he worked on the soundtrack The Talented Mr. Ripley as a pianist in the Napoli Jazz Septet and wrote film music for various works in Portuguese films , such as Quaresma by José Álvaro Morais or Maria e as outras by José de Sá Caetano .

Sassetti was nominated for the Mercury Award in 1995 .

He was married to the actress Beatriz Batarda , with whom he had two children.

On May 10, 2012, Sassetti had a fatal accident when he fell from cliffs near Praia do Guincho (near Cascais ). Since then he has been remembered again and again, for example in September 2012 in a series of concerts lasting several days with the Trio Bernardo Sassetti and guests at the Teatro São Luiz .
