Luís Paulo Fontes Represas (born November 24, 1956 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese musician.

Life

From the beginning to the end of Trovantes 1992

His musical interest was aroused in elementary school and then in the choir lessons at the Liceu Pedro Nunes grammar school . At the age of 13 he learned to play guitar by himself and played pieces by Anglo-Saxon bands and rock musicians such as Pink Floyd , Yes , Genesis , Gentle Giant , Beatles , Rolling Stones , Joni Mitchell and Neil Young with his first student band . Then he heard Brazilian musicians like Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso , later other Latin American musicians like Quilapayún , Pablo Milanés and Silvio Rodríguez and also a lot of Irish folk .

After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, varieties of political song dominated Portugal . In this environment, Represas founded the Trovante group in 1976 with João Gil, Manuel Faria, Artur Costa and his brother João Nuno . The folk-influenced pop / rock band became very successful until they broke up in 1992. Represas also took part in the works of other musicians. He performed with José Mário Branco and worked on José Afonso's album Fura Fura in 1985 .

From 1993 to 2000

After the end of Trovante, Represas went to Cuba with bassist Nani Teixeira in 1993 , where he made music with Pablo Milanés, pianist Miguel Nuñez and others and gained new inspiration. His first solo album Represas (EMI-VC, 1993) emerged from it. The album was released in a Portuguese-language and a Spanish-language version and contained Feiticeira (Portuguese for a "sorceress") much-acclaimed duet with Pablo Milanés.

In 1994 he returned to Portugal and toured the country with his new album. The highlight of the tour was a concert in the Coliseu dos Recreios with 16 musicians, including the Cuban musicians of his album recordings. In addition to his new songs, he also played well-known pieces by Trovante, rearranged by Miguel Nuñez .

In 1994 he started his first television program Música dos Outros (Portuguese for: "Music of Others"), in which he rearranged and re-arranged current songs.

For his next album in 1995 Represas turned back to Irish music and invited u. a. Davy Spillane as a guest musician. In 1996 his second album Cumplicidades was released , produced and arranged by Bernardo Sassetti . Represas then went on tour through Portugal, with a concert at the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) as the climax, which was then released as a sound carrier under the title Ao vivo no CCB .

In 1996 Represas appeared at the invitation of the Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez as a soloist in two performances of his Misa Criolla at the CCB, accompanied by an 80-member choir.

In 1998 Represas moved from EMI - VC to the Portuguese BMG at the invitation of the musician and composer Tozé Britos , former A&R of BMG. There he released his third album, Na Hora do Lobo (Portuguese for "In the Hour of the Wolf"), on which he again worked with Miguel Nuñez. In the same year he appeared at the Expo 98 .

At the invitation of the President Jorge Sampaio , Represas appeared in early 2000 with his group Trovante, which was revived once for this purpose, at the handover ceremony of Macau , the last Portuguese colony returned to the People's Republic of China at the end of 1999 .

In 2000, Represas visited East Timor , where he returned shortly afterwards for the celebrations marking the country's first anniversary of independence. The background to his performance is also the anthemic trovante piece Timor , which is still popular today . It was one of the best-known of the numerous songs in Portugal which, after 1991, dealt with the fate of the Indonesian-occupied former Portuguese colony of East Timor with high publicity.

In 2000 he performed with Daniela Mercury at the Brazilian festival PãoMusic and produced his next album Código Verde (Portuguese for “Green Code”) in Spain . a. the Brazilian samba musician and author Martinho da Vila . In the same year Represas sang the Portuguese dubbing voice for the songs originally sung by Phil Collins in the Disney cartoon Tarzan and composed music for Portuguese television series.

Since 2000

Represas then steadily recorded more albums and very often reached the Portuguese charts with them. Fora de Mão , which was released in 2003 and remained in the charts for 17 weeks, and Olhos Nos Olhos from 2008, which climbed to number 4, can be considered the most successful albums . With his single Quero uma casa deste tamanho (Portuguese for “I want a house this size”) he even had a number 1 hit in Portugal in 2002 .

On June 9, 2005, Represas was awarded the Order of Merit in Commander's Degree.

Represas is one of the most famous musicians in Portugal today. He also worked on recordings by other musicians, including Margareth Menezes , José Cid , Rui Veloso , André Sardet , Mafalda Veiga and Sétima Legião .
