Presidential election in Portugal 2011

The 2011 presidential election in Portugal took place on January 23, 2011. Those entitled to vote were called upon to elect the head of state of Portugal by direct and secret ballot.

The president is elected for five years. According to the constitution, a candidate must have a majority of 50% + ½ of the valid votes. If nobody achieves an absolute majority in the first ballot, a run-off election takes place between the two candidates with the most votes.

Any Portuguese citizen over 35 years of age is eligible. Between 7,500 and 15,000 signatures from supporters are required for a candidacy.

Results

The incumbent President Cavaco Silva was confirmed in office with almost 53 percent ready in the first ballot. The socialist challenger Manuel Alegre was reportedly only 19.7 percent. The third-placed Fernando Nobre was able to convince 14.1 percent of the voters. The turnout was below 47 percent, the lowest it has ever been in a presidential election in Portugal since the end of the dictatorship in 1974.
