Partido da Nova Democracia
The Partido da Nova Democracia (PND), [ pɐɾ'tidu dɐ 'nɔvɐ dɨmukɾɐ'siɐ ], in English "Party of the New Democracy", is a small Portuguese party that, as a conservative-liberal split from the Centro Democrático e Social - Partido Popular ( CDS-PP) was created. Its chairman is Manuel Monteiro , who headed the CDS-PP from 1992 to 1997. The party was founded in 2003, the first party conference took place in October 2003 in Vila Nova de Famalicão . There the delegates decided on the party manifesto entitled Uma Ideia de Portugal (“An Presentation of Portugal”). The PND also publishes a party newspaper called DemocraciaLiberal ("Liberal Democracy").
The party defines itself through its Euroscepticism , but continues to plead for Portugal to remain in the European Union. She is a member of the European party Europeans United for Democracy . Furthermore, the PND calls for a liberal economic policy, a reform of the Portuguese legal system and a new constitution with a significant strengthening of the president .
The party first appeared in the 2004 European elections, but was unable to win a mandate. In the following years, too, she won no seats in parliamentary or European elections.
The PND achieved its greatest success so far in the early election to the regional parliament of the Portuguese Atlantic island of Madeira in May 2007: it won a mandate with 2928 votes (2.08 percent). In 2011 the result was increased to 4,825 votes (3.27%) and the mandate was defended.
