Election process
The final phase of the election campaign was marked by a financial scandal in which Alberto João Jardim and his Social Democratic Party came under severe criticism because Madeira's actual debt of five billion euros had not been correctly stated for years, resulting in a deficit of 1.1 billion Euro only appeared in September 2011.
The Social Democrats, ruling alone since the Carnation Revolution , subsequently lost an absolute majority in the election, the worst result in their history, but with 25 seats they still had an absolute majority in the 47-seat regional parliament. The opposition Portuguese People's Party (CDS-PP) recorded a tripling of its votes with 17.63 percent and was represented in the new parliament with 9 instead of 2 seats. It replaced the Socialist Party (PS), which lost a mandate, as the largest opposition party in the region. The new PTP won three mandates straight away, with all other parties there were only minor postponements.
The two main opposition parties, CDS-PP and PS, alleged irregularities during the election and filed a formal complaint with the electoral authority.
