Partido da Terra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Partido da Terra , also Movimento o Partido da Terra (MPT), in English Movement of the Party of the Earth , is an ecologically oriented, rather conservative small party in Portugal . The party founded in 1993 by Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles has set itself the highest political goal of protecting the environment and conserving existing resources, while promoting “social and individual health and well-being”. She advocates the protection of Portuguese culture and its traditions and wants to strengthen Lusophonie worldwide.

history

In 1993, the former minister Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles resigned from the Partido Popular Monárquico party he had founded , as he saw no way of implementing his ecological programs in the right-wing conservative party. For this reason he founded the Movimento Partido da Terra (Movement Party of the Earth) on August 12, 1993 . He is still Honorary President of the party to this day, with John Rosas Baker as chairman.

The party has recently had some success with its election results. Through an electoral alliance with the liberal-conservative Portuguese Social Democrats, two parliamentarians represented the party in the Assembleia da República from 2005 , they were members of the PSD parliamentary group. In 2007, the MPT took part in the regional elections in Madeira for the first time and achieved 3173 votes (2.25 percent) from a standstill and sent a representative to the regional assembly. Nevertheless, the party is not represented throughout Portugal, only in seven out of 14 districts it has district associations.

For the 2009 European elections, the MPT cooperated with the pan-European, EU-skeptical Libertas party . The leader of the party, Pedro Quartin Graça Simão José, ran as the top candidate for the joint electoral alliance. The alliance came to 0.7%. For the parliamentary election in September 2009 , the MPT ran in the majority of the constituencies on a list with the Humanist Party . The alliance got 0.2% of the vote. In the 2011 parliamentary elections , the MPT came to 0.4%.

In the regional elections in Madeira in 2011 , the MPT lost slightly to 1.9%, but was able to defend its mandate.

In the 2014 European elections , the MPT surprisingly won 7.1% of the vote and moved into the European Parliament with two MPs - António Marinho e Pinto and José Inácio Faria . The deputies joined the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group of. Marinho e Pinto left the MPT in September 2014 and later founded the Partido Democrático Republicano . The MPT joined the ALDE party in November 2014 , which it left in December 2016. Faria left the ALDE Group and joined the Group of the European People's Party (EPP).

At the international level, the MPT is a member of the political party association WEP .
