Distribution of seats

A total of 230 seats

In the parliamentary elections in Portugal in 2011 on June 5, 2011, around 9.62 million Portuguese at home and abroad were called upon to redefine the 230 mandates in the Assembleia da República and thus the 19th constitutional government of Portugal after 1976 . The election became necessary after the incumbent Prime Minister José Sócrates resigned from office because his austerity package had failed to find a majority. The challenger of the re-running Sócrates was the chairman of the conservative-liberal opposition party Partido Social Democrata , Pedro Passos Coelho .

Election campaign

The main focus of the election campaign was the effects of the global economic and financial crisis and the associated financial difficulties in the state budget.

Election result

The most (left) and second most (right) elected party in the Portuguese districts . Madeira and Azores are not shown.

As in 2009, the PS (Socialists) had to record significant losses and only achieved 28.06%, whereupon the still incumbent Prime Minister Sócrates announced his resignation as party chairman. The previous opposition parties PSD (Liberals) and CDS – PP (Conservatives) achieved an absolute majority with 132 of the 230 parliamentary seats and started coalition negotiations. Under the impression that most decisions can no longer be made by the government due to the austerity measures of the International Monetary Fund , the turnout fell to a negative record of 58.07%. In the electoral region of Bragança, non-voters were in the majority with 50.8%, in the Azores even with 59.4%. The final result was not announced until June 15, as four seats will be awarded by Portuguese living abroad.

1 The Coligação Democrática Unitaria is a list association of the PCP , the Greens and the Intervenção Democrática (ID).
2 Empty votes are treated as invalid votes, since in this case the voter did not put a cross.
3 Invalid votes are votes that, according to Portuguese electoral law, do not clearly show the will of the electorate, for example because several parties have been ticked.
