Palácio de São Bento , the seat of the Portuguese parliament

The 1976 parliamentary elections in Portugal took place on April 25 amid a climate of fierce political fighting over the future path of the 1974 Carnation Revolution . Demonstrations, strikes and bombings increasingly determined the conflicts between the various political directions. It was the first election in Portugal, based on the new democratic constitution adopted on April 2nd, which replaced the previous one from the times of the Estado Novo . The country found itself in a grave economic and financial situation characterized by galloping and uncontrollable inflation and growing unemployment.

In the elections, the Social Democratic Socialist Party won , which was slightly below the results of 1975. Even the conservative-liberal Democratic People's Party (PPD), which was renamed the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in 1976 , failed to improve its results from 1975. The right-wing conservative Social and Democratic Center (CDS), which on April 2 opposed the adoption of the had voted in his view of the “socialist constitution”, was able to achieve his election goal and become stronger than the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), which also improved its election results .

With these results, the four main political forces established themselves in Portuguese politics for the following decades.

It was only after the presidential election on June 27 that the newly elected President, Ramalho Eanes , supported by the PS, PPD and CDS, entrusted the chairman of the PS, Mário Soares , with the formation of the first constitutional government. Soares formed a minority government supported by the PS, made up of socialists, the military and independent experts, which began its work on July 23, 1976 and operated until December 1977.

The turnout was 83.53%. The counting was done according to the D'Hondt method .
