Presidential election in Portugal 1976
The 1976 presidential election in Portugal took place on June 27, 1976 . It was the first election of the head of state after the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974.
The direct elections were General António Ramalho Eanes (independent, but with the support of the parties of the moderate left and the center-right parties), Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho (independent, former head of the military authority COPCON ), Pinheiro de Azevedo (independent, former Prime Minister) and Octávio Pato (with the support of the PCP ).
The year before, Ramalho Eanes was head of a unit that on November 25, 1975 overthrew a left-wing radical faction in the MFA that had essentially rallied around Captain Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho . He won the election with over 60 percent of the valid votes and achieved a majority of votes in all districts (with the exception of the Setúbal district ) as well as in the two autonomous regions.
