President Eanes, 1983

António dos Santos Ramalho Eanes [ ɐ̃ˈtɔniw duʃ ˈsɐ̃tuʃ ʁɐˈmaʎu ˈjɐnɨʃ ] (born January 25, 1935 in Alcains ) was from 1976 to 1986 the first democratically elected President of Portugal .

Life

Ramalho Eanes comes from a modest background and was unable to study as hoped. He joined the military and was an officer in the colonial war in Angola during the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974 . When he returned to Portugal, he joined the Armed Forces Movement ( MFA ). He became known when, on November 25, 1975, he overthrew a radical left faction in the MFA, which had essentially rallied around Captain Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho . He competed against this in the first free presidential election and won on June 27, 1976. He took office on July 14 and was re-elected in December 1980 with a large majority.

In the early years, Ramalho Eanes was viewed by many on the left as a traitor to the ideals of the MFA. As president he tried to preserve certain bourgeois ideals of the initial Carnation Revolution; He accepted political isolation and founded his own party ( Partido Renovador Democrático ), which only became important for a short time. Like other representatives of the Carnation Revolution, Ramalho Eanes was a soldier with no political experience, his ideas remained general and ultimately had little lasting effect.

Eanes has been a member of the State Council since 1986 .
