The National Order of the Southern Cross (officially Portuguese Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul ) is the highest order of merit in Brazil for foreigners and was established on December 5, 1932 by President Getúlio Dornelles Vargas . The order is conferred by the Grand Master of the Order, the President of the Republic.

After more than 40 years of interruption, Vargas took this Order of Merit back into the Brazilian religious system , originally donated as Ordem Imperial do Cruzeiro by Emperor Dom Pedro I of Brazil on December 1, 1822 and ended in 1889 with the proclamation of the Republic.

Order classes

The order consists of five classes.

In addition to the Grand Cross, the medal, the highest distinction, can also be awarded with a Collane (Grande Colar).

Order decoration

Grand Cross. In addition to the badge shown on the ribbon, a breast star is awarded in this category.

The medal is a white-enamelled five-armed ten-pointed cross with a golden rim and small golden balls on the cross tips. A green enamelled laurel wreath is visible in the five cross angles, as the cross is placed on the wreath. The Brazilian imperial crown hovered over everything until the end of the monarchy. A support ring is attached to this. In the center round, gold medallion , the image of the donor is embossed on the front in gold. The medallion is set with a dark blue ring and is surrounded by the golden motto Petrus, Brasiliae Imperator. The back of the medallion shows the constellation Cross of the South formed from white stars on light blue enamel , which also gave it its name. The inscription in the dark blue ring is here Praemium bene Merentium.

Ribbon

The plain blue ribbon is worn over the right shoulder to the left in the 1st class (Grand Cross). Male grand officer and commander wear the order as a neck medal , officer and knight as a buckle on the left chest. Women wear the order of classes III-VI as a bow over the left breast, classes I and II as above.

Grand and Grand Officer's Cross are complemented by a gold, five-pointed star worn on the left breast. Star medallion and medallion back are the same. The crown over the additional star was gold.
