Horacio Manuel Cartes Jara (born July 5, 1956 in Asunción , Paraguay ) is a Paraguayan businessman and politician. He was President of Paraguay from 2013 to 2018 .

Education and professional career

Horacio Cartes attended the Goethe School (Colegio Goethe, a German school abroad ), the Colegio Internacional and the Jesuit Colegio Cristo Rey in Asunción. On the advice of his father, who represented the Cessna company in Paraguay, he then completed an apprenticeship as an aircraft mechanic in Wichita , Kansas .

From the 1990s, Cartes worked as an entrepreneur in various industries and built up a corporate empire of banks, tobacco, beverage and food companies as well as trading companies. He is also president of the Libertad football club .

Cartes is one of the richest people in Paraguay.

Political career

Cartes only joined the Colorado Party in 2009 . In November 2010 he founded the inner-party movement Honor Colorado and was elected as his party's presidential candidate in the internal elections in December 2012.

On April 21, 2013, Horacio Cartes was elected President with 45.8% of the vote. He took office on August 15, 2013. The regular term of office is five years.

After serious unrest, Cartes agreed on April 17, 2017 not to run again in the presidential election. He is also following the advice of the Pope. On May 28, 2018, he resigned as President. The Vice-President Alicia Beatriz Pucheta de Correa thus became the incumbent President. On June 26, 2018, he announced his resignation in a letter to Fernando Lugo , President of the National Congress .
