Mario Abdo Benítez , also known as Marito (born November 10, 1971 in Asunción , Paraguay ), is a Paraguayan politician ( Partido Colorado ). On August 15, 2018, he took over the office of President of Paraguay , to which he was elected on April 22, 2018. Abdo was previously President of the Paraguayan Senate from 2015 to 2016 .

Life

Mario Abdo Benítez uses the first name Marito to distinguish it from his father of the same name. He comes from a traditionally politically active family; his father was temporarily the private secretary of the former dictator Alfredo Stroessner . Abdo mentioned to the Paraguayan press that Stroessner had done a lot for the country, but distanced himself from the human rights violations committed at the time .

He started his service in the Paraguayan armed forces in 1989 with the rank of sub-lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve. He then completed a marketing degree at Teikyo Post University in Waterbury (Connecticut) in the USA .

Political career

His own political career began in 2005 within the Colorado Party . His most important political offices to date have been that of the vice-president of his party, and from 2015 to 2016 that of the president of the Paraguayan Senate. In December 2017, he prevailed in the internal party primaries for the presidential candidacy with 51.0% of the votes against the former Finance Minister Santiago Peña , who was favored by the previous President Horacio Cartes , who received 43.2% of the votes. In the presidential election on April 22, 2018 , he prevailed with 46.5% of the vote against Efraín Alegre , the candidate of the Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico , who got 42.7%. On August 15, 2018, Abdo took over from his predecessor Horacio Cartes.
