Luis Federico Franco Gómez (born July 23, 1962 in Asunción , Paraguay ) is a Paraguayan politician, doctor and was President of Paraguay between June 22, 2012 and August 15, 2013 .

Education and professional career

Franco completed his school education in his native town Asunción, where he first attended the Escuela República Dominicana in primary school and then the Colegio Nacional in secondary school and finished his school career with the Bachillerato at the Colegio Apostólico San José . He then studied at the Medical Faculty (Facultad de Ciencias Médicas) of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UNA) and became a doctor after successfully completing his studies. He obtained the title of surgeon (Médico Cirujano) in 1986. Building on this, he completed a postgraduate degree as an internist. In the family hospital, the Sanatorio Franco in the town of Fernando de la Mora , which belongs to him and his brothers, he then worked as a doctor. Management positions followed at the Hospital de Clinicas and the Hospital Nacional . Since June 24, 1991 he has been a member of the Sociedad Paraguaya de Medicina Interna . There he was a member of the executive committee. From 1991 to 1992 he was also a trainer for medical semiology. From 1994 he was on-call manager at the Hospital Nacional, where he also held management positions as a cardiologist and internist until 1996.

Political career

He has been a member of the Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA) since 1976 , of which he was a member of the board of directors from 2002 to 2008 and of which he was president of the board until he was replaced by Blas Antonio Llano Ramos in August 2010.

He was initially active as a city councilor in Fernando de la Mora from 1991 to 1996 . He then held the post of Intendente of the city of Fernando de la Mora from 1996 to 2001 . He was governor of the Departamento Central from 2003 to 2007, but resigned from this post in order to prepare for his candidacy with Fernando Lugo . After a successful election, in which he ran for the PLRA with the Alianza Patriótica para el Cambio (APC), he was Vice President of Paraguay and Senate President since 2008, but distanced himself from Lugo shortly after the election due to ideological differences.

Following impeachment proceedings against Lugo, Federico Franco was sworn in as the new President of Paraguay on June 22, 2012. His successor as Vice President was Óscar Denis .

The April 2013 presidential election , in which Franco no longer ran, was won by Horacio Cartes of the Colorado Party . Until he was sworn in on August 15, 2013, Franco continued the official business.

Private

Franco is Catholic and married to PLRA MP Emilia Alfaro . The couple has four children, Luis, Claudia, Iván and Enzo. Franco is the brother of Julio César Franco , who was Paraguay's Vice-President from 2000 to 2002 and who was the PLRA's presidential candidate in 2003.
