The Universidad Nacional de Asunción (UNA) is a state university in Paraguay . It is the oldest and largest university in Paraguay. In addition, it is one of the best universities in Paraguay in several international rankings.
The National University was established by law of September 24, 1889 and opened on March 1, 1890. Initially there were only two faculties: law and social sciences and medicine and related fields. Ramón Zubizarreta was the first rector.
Dionísio Gonzales Torres was rector from 1969 to 1989.
The university has facilities in Asunción , Luque and San Lorenzo . In 2006 the university had 35,116 students enrolled.
In September 2015 there were student protests and blockades on the campus of the university in Asunción. After it became known that Rector Froilán Peralta had secretly employed relatives and acquaintances at the university's expense.
