Luque ( Guaraní Lúke ) is a district city in the Central Department in Paraguay . The city has about 324,000 inhabitants (as of 2012).

geography

Luque is 19 km from Asunción on a plain between Lake Ypacaraí and the Paraguay River .

history

In 1635 Martín de Ledesma Valderrama, governor of Paraguay since 1633, granted the captain Miguel Antón de Luque "by royal grace" the ownership of lands that stretched over two leguas "in the Salinas Valley" and that for more than two decades in Luques Were possessions . This decree of the governor ( Spanish providencia ) is the first written mention of the settlement from which the present-day city of Luque emerged. In Luque you can still find well-preserved buildings from the colonial era .

During the Triple Alliance War , Luque was the capital of Paraguay from February 22 to December 7, 1868.

Economy and Transport

To the northwest of the city center is Paraguay's largest airport, Aeropuerto Internacional Silvio Pettirossi .

The city is known for its harp and guitar production as well as for gold and silversmiths.

Soccer

The South American football association CONMEBOL is based in Luque.

The two-time football champions Club Sportivo Luqueño , which plays in the Primera División , is based in Luque .
