The Plaza of Ñemby

Ñemby is a city in the Paraguayan Central Department with 135,300 inhabitants (2018). It is part of the metropolitan area of the state capital Asunción . It extends around a hill 176 m high - a tertiary volcano with a viewpoint. The place name means border on Guaraní .

history

In 1718, Spanish settlers founded the Church of San Lorenzo . At that time the place had 2,187 inhabitants. On August 2, 1899 , an administrative unit was created from what was then still called San Lorenzo de la Frontera . On July 25, 1984, it was promoted to a city of the first category.

economy

Mining has been going on in the village since 1961. Many residents had to leave their homes, and the constant explosions caused damage to many buildings in the city. After long-term protests by residents, mining was stopped in 2017. He left a 12 acre hole.
