history

After the Triple Alliance War , in which the country's population was decimated, the government gave new immigrants from Europe agricultural land to farm and raise cattle. Around 1890, Belgian immigrants founded the Mbocayaty colony, which was later also home to French and Italians. They mainly grew fruit. However, the Belgians moved to the capital after a while. Their land was sold to the Dane Emil Johannsen, who named the colony in 1896 in honor of his Austrian wife Elisa von Poleski Colonia Elisa . On June 21, 1899, the first board of directors was created under the leadership of Johannsen. More immigrants from Sweden, Finland and Germany moved to the Elisa colony. They also grew fruit, but could only do this on a small scale due to a lack of manpower. The fruit was exported to Europe. The livestock industry was of secondary importance. On March 22, 1938, Villa Elisa was elevated to a district.
