Villeta is a port city and district in the Central Department in Paraguay with around 39,100 inhabitants. It is located on the Paraguay River, 34 km from Asunción .

history

The place was founded on March 5, 1714 by Governor Juan Gregorio Bazán de Pedraza as San Felipe de Borbón en el Valle del Bastán en los Campos del Guarnipitán . On May 16, 1884, the municipality of Villeta was created. At the end of the 19th century, the port of Villeta was already one of the most important in the country. From here, agricultural products such as oranges were exported. During the Chaco War , the first industry was established in 1933, a cotton factory.

economy

Villeta is one of the most important port cities in Paraguay. On October 31, 2018, a new port terminal with a size of 19 hectares and spaces for over 7,000 containers was inaugurated. It is located at the kilometer reading of 1,578 of the Paraguay River in a strategically favorable position, which allows permanent navigation even at low tide. It is the first port of call in the Asunción region for ships from Buenos Aires and Montevideo . There are also 69 companies in the city, including wood processing, biodiesel production, the chemical industry, cement and paper production and a shipyard.
