The Primera División de Paraguay (officially División Profesional de la Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol ) is the highest football league in Paraguay . Twelve teams play an Apertura and a Clausura on 44 match days between February and December Championship off.

history

Football, the national sport in Paraguay, was introduced to Paraguay by the Dutch immigrant William Paats at the end of the 19th century . At first he only taught the sport at a school in Asunción , but the sport gradually became more and more popular. In 1902 Paats founded the first Paraguayan football club, Club Olimpia . On November 25, 1903, the first game of two Paraguayan clubs was played between Olimpia and Club Guaraní .

On June 18, 1906, the two clubs together with Club Libertad , Club General Díaz and Club Nacional founded the Liga Paraguaya de Fútbol , forerunner of today's association, the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol . This immediately hosted the country's first football championship, which, according to the name of a newspaper, was held as the Copa el Diario until 1916 . The first game took place on July 8, 1906 between Guaraní and Olimpia and ended 1-1. At the end of the first season Guaraní was the first champion of Paraguay. In the game for second place, Olimpia prevailed against Libertad. In 1908 and 1922, a coup d'état and civil war prevented the championship from being held. After the competition was suspended from 1932 to 1934 due to the Chaco War , the championship was resumed as a professional competition in 1935.

In 1910 a second league, the Copa Intendencia Municipal was introduced whose first master Club Sol de América was promoted to the first division and replaced Club Mbiguá . A third division also existed, but only youth teams competed in it.

In 1911, a league of renegade teams, the Liga Centenario , was established in 1916 as Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol (not to be confused with the later name of the national association). Their masters were:

The mode of the league changed several times over the years. In a few years a final for the championship was held between the best two teams. In the 1950s, the championship was temporarily divided into two rounds, after which the best teams played the title in another competition. In 2008 the Apertura and Clausura mode were introduced. The Apertura 2009 was the 100th tournament since the Paraguayan Football League was founded.

So far, 8 different teams have won the Paraguayan football championship. With 44 championships, Olimpia is by far the most successful team in the country. It is followed by Cerro Porteño with 32 titles and Libertad with 20 championships. So far, only one team from a city other than the capital Asunción has won the national title, Presidente Hayes from the city of the same name in 1952. Internationally, Olimpia is the only Paraguayan club that has won titles. These include the 1979 World Cup and 3 successes in the Copa Libertadores (1979, 1990, 2002).

mode

league

12 teams take part in the league. The season usually runs from February to December. The matches take place on Saturdays and Sundays, and in some weeks there will also be games on Wednesdays.

The Paraguayan championship is held in Apertura and Clausura mode. The Apertura takes place from February to June or July, the Clausura starts in July and ends in December. A separate title is awarded for both competitions, so that there are two Paraguayan football champions during one calendar year.

The two teams that have scored the fewest points on average over the past three years will be relegated and replaced by the champions and runners-up of the second division ( División Intermedia ).

International

Paraguay receives six international starting places, three for the Copa Libertadores and three for the Copa Sudamericana . The two masters from Apertura and Clausura automatically take part in the Copa Libertadores. The tables of Apertura and Clausura are aggregated to determine the other places that qualify for participation in the international competitions. The team that scored the most points overall, alongside the two champions, takes third place in the Copa Libertadores. If a team wins both Apertura and Clausura, the third-best team also takes part in the Copa Libertadores. The first place in the Copa Sudamericana is awarded to the best champion in the aggregated table. As a result, a Paraguayan team plays in both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana in one season. The two other places for the Copa Sudamericana go to the two remaining best teams that have not yet been assigned an international place. International meetings are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
