The Liga de Fútbol Profesional Boliviano is the top division in Bolivian club football. The record champions are Club Bolívar from the capital La Paz with a total of 18 titles.

Two championships have been held per season since 2002: the so-called Apertura in the first half of each season and the Clausura in the second half . Until 2010, a game year was identical to the calendar year, in the extended 2011/12 season the changeover to the summer-to-summer season took place.

history

Regional championships were held in Bolivia until the early 1950s. With the Torneo Integrado from 1954 to 1957, a championship was held for the first time in which several regions ( La Paz , Cochabamba and Oruro ) were involved. But it was not until 1977 that a real national league was introduced.

The league started in 1977 with 16 teams. It was reduced to 15 teams in 1979 and 14 teams in 1980. In the following seasons, the number of participants fluctuated between 12 and 16 teams, until the reduction to 12 participants in the 1994 game year. 14 teams have played in the league since 2018.

The "eternal rivals " from the capital La Paz , Bolívar and The Strongest , as well as Oriente Petrolero from Santa Cruz de la Sierra are the only founding members of the league who have never been relegated.
