Immigration control at the airport

The Aeropuerto Internacional Silvio Pettirossi is the international airport of the Paraguayan capital Asunción . The airport is located in the district of the neighboring city of Luque .

Originally the airport was called Aeropuerto Internacional de Asunción . On the occasion of the inauguration of a new terminal building in 1959, the airport was renamed Aeropuerto Internacional Presidente Stroessner . After the dictator's fall in 1989, the airport was given its current name after the Paraguayan aviation pioneer Silvio Pettirossi .

In the southern part of the airport is the military base of the Paraguayan Air Force Fuerza Aérea Paraguaya . Part of the runway of the Base Aérea de Ñu Guasu , built in 1937, has been preserved and is used by the 1st Brigada Aérea. The Brigada Aerotransportada transport squadron uses the airport's runway today.

Transport links

As the airport is located in the city of Luque, it can be reached from the city of Asunción via the main airport road (Autopista Silvio Pettirossi), which runs next to the nearby Parque Ñu Guasu . The bus connection 30-A connects the city center of Asunción, around 16 kilometers away, with the airport terminal. It is five kilometers to the center of Luque.

Airlines and direct connections

In addition to neighboring Argentina, there are flight connections to several other South American countries.

Incidents

Since 1945 there have been a number of accidents at Asunción Airport and in its vicinity. Example:

  • On February 4, 1996, an empty Douglas DC-8-55F of LAC Colombia ( aircraft registration HK-3979X ) took off from Asunción Airport for a positioning flight to Viracopos Airport near Sao Paulo, in order to carry out a cargo flight from there. Shortly after taking off, the power of two engines was throttled. There was a stall and the machine fell two kilometers behind the runway onto a playing field. All three crew members and the only passenger on board were killed and 20 people were killed on the ground. It was suspected that the crew had used the positioning flight to conduct unauthorized pilot training.
