content

Growing up in the family of a pastor, Martin interrupts his studies and drops out, "seeks contact with simple life, with simple people, seeks life." Not particularly musically gifted, he begins to work as a violinist in a hotel orchestra and travels with them a band and "is looking for a kick , is looking for what life in the world has to offer: wine, women and song ."

The book represents the "completed revolution of society, ... the elimination of prejudices and unreal, outdated traditions, ... the return to the essentials in the relationships between people"; it is "good in style and masterful in description", "the revolution of bourgeois society , in a country spared the war, carried out in a single young person."

The “novella anticipates ... the speech that emerged around 1940 about the“ conformists ”as socially conformists. And the protagonist Martin makes an almost typical non-conformist breakout attempt for 1942. "

The novella is also a thesis novel : The author describes himself as a neurotic and the female figures in particular correspond to medical constitution types . In his work New Viewpoints in Psychology from 1944, he refers to being a world puzzle solver in the spirit of Ernst Haeckel , guided by Émile Zola's spirit . In his popular scientific work Psychology and Weltanschauung , he describes in detail the characters of his characters and thus takes up the medical theses of his novella.
