Jânio Quadros

Jânio da Silva Quadros (born January 25, 1917 in Campo Grande , MS , † February 16, 1992 in São Paulo , SP ) was a Brazilian politician and president of his country in 1961 .

Da Silva Quadros was city councilor from 1948 to 1953 and city prefect (mayor) of the city of São Paulo from 1953 to 1954 and 1955. He switched to state politics and was governor of the state of the same name from 1955 to 1959 . In 1960 he ran for the presidential election. His election victory against politicians of the old guard, especially with promises of further democratization and the fight against corruption , caused a stir. He had won the election primarily as an anti-politician; his open friendship and support for Fidel Castro brought the United States to the scene.

He took over the presidency from Juscelino Kubitschek in 1961 . Quadros tried with radical means to reorganize the national budget, thereby making himself unpopular, but above all with his eccentric nature. After only seven months in office, he announced his resignation on August 25, 1961, in the hope that the masses would take to the streets for him. The masses did not do this and his successor, according to the constitution, was the social reformist former Vice President João Goulart . However, since Goulart was on a state visit to China at the time of da Silva Quadros' resignation, Parliament President Pascoal Ranieri Mazzilli took office until Goulart's return on September 7, 1961.

From January 1, 1986 to December 31, 1988, he held the office of Mayor of São Paulo for the third time.
