Alcains is a Portuguese municipality ( freguesia ) and small town ( Vila ) in the district of Castelo Branco . The community is 36.9 km² and has 5022 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
geography
Centrally located in the Castelo Branco district, Alcains is about 10 km from the district town.
history
The traces of human settlement go back to the Neolithic here . There are also a number of finds here from the time of the Roman occupation, such as an oven or a column of gods from the second century. The name, which can be traced back to Alkaij (roughly: existent, permanent), probably dates back to the time of the Moorish occupation .
Since the Reconquista in the possession of the later first King Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques , it was owned by King Afonso III. bequeathed to the Knights Templar .
In 1971 Alcains was elevated to Vila (small town).

The municipality consists only of the village of Alcains.
traffic
Alcais is a stop on the Linha da Beira Baixa in the national railway network.
With its own connection to the A23 motorway, the place is integrated into the state's motorway network.
economy
Agriculture, especially livestock farming, is traditionally important. The cheese from Alcains has a national reputation. The granite that we quarried here is also known.
Alcains has also been a place of the manufacturing industry since the emergence of larger craft businesses in the 16th century . Textile, food, wood and granite processing industries in particular are based here today. A major employer is the clothing manufacturer Dielmar.
