Aurélio Granada Escudeiro

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro (born May 19, 1920 in Alcains ; † August 25, 2012 in Ponta Delgada on the Portuguese Azores island of São Miguel ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Angra .

Life

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro studied philosophy and theology at the seminaries in Gavião , Alcains and Olivais . He was ordained a priest on January 17, 1943 in Gavião . Then he was pastor in Gavião (1943–44) and Ortiga , Mação (1944–1948). From 1948 to 1952 he was professor of religious studies at the Lyceum in Castelo Branco and two other universities. He was committed to Catholic Action for 15 years and was its general secretary. From 1964 to 1974 he was also general secretary of the Nacional da Associação Católica Internacional ao Serviço da Juventude Feminina and of the Nacional das Obras Católicas Portuguesas para as Migrações . In 1974 he was appointed secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Migration.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 18, 1974 Coadjutor Bishop of Angra and Titular Bishop of Drusiliana . The Patriarch of Lisbon António Cardinal Ribeiro donated him episcopal ordination on May 26, 1974 ; Co- consecrators were Agostinho Joaquim Lopes de Moura CSSp , Bishop of Portalegre-Castelo Branco , and Manuel Alfonso de Carvalho , Bishop of Angra.

In 1975 he founded the Regional Secretariat for Migrant Pastoral Care and in 1976 the Diocesan Commission for Social Communication. He was particularly committed to helping refugees because of the problems with the African decolonization process on the Portuguese Azores Islands ; authorized by the Apostolic Letter of Pope Paul VI. Sanctae Regimen Ecclesiae .

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro was a member of the Episcopal Commission for Migration and Tourism of the Portuguese Bishops' Conference .

Pope John Paul II appointed him 37th Bishop of Angra on June 30, 1979 . Pope John Paul II was his guest during the 1991 pilgrimage to the Azores islands of Terceira and São Miguel .

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro was an honorary citizen of Angra do Heroísmo . He was the initiator of the festival "Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres on Sao Miguel", one of the largest island festivals on the island of Sao Miguel that takes place on the 5th Sunday after Easter.

On April 9, 1996, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He died at the age of 92 of complications from pneumonia in the house of the Ponta Delgada Society.

Carlos César , President of the Regional Government of the Azores, thanked Aurélio Granada for his decades of service in the Azores with his episcopal activities.
