history
The diocese Portalegre-Castelo Branco was on April 2, 1550 by Pope Julius III. established with the Apostolic Constitution Pro Excellenti Apostolicae Sedis from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Évora and the Diocese of Guarda as the Diocese of Portalegre and subordinated to the Patriarchate of Lisbon as a suffragan . On September 30, 1881 the diocese Portalegre by Pope Leo XIII. affiliated with the Apostolic Constitution Gravissimum Christi, the dioceses of Castelo Branco and Elvas . The diocese Portalegre was renamed on July 18, 1956 in the Diocese Portalegre-Castelo Branco .
