Portalegre Cathedral

The Cathedral of Port Alegre ( Portuguese Sé de Portalegre ) is the episcopal see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portalegre-Castelo Branco in the town of Portalegre in the mountainous east of Portugal . There is a co- cathedral in the town of Castelo Branco, about 50 km to the north .

location

The north-east oriented cathedral is opposite the castle (castelo) in the south-west of the old town of Portalegre, which is only about 10 meters from the border with Spain , at a height of about 470  m .

history

In 1150, Pope Julius III created with the Apostolic Constitution Pro Excellenti Apostolicae Sedis the diocese Portalegre. On the initiative of King Joãos III. the military architect Afonso Álvares began building the cathedral in 1556; it was completed and consecrated in 1575. In 1795, slight corrections were made to the facade and a comprehensive renovation of the interior.

Inside of the cathedral

The three-portal facade, characterized by numerous windows, is flanked by two side bell towers with pointed helmets . While the wall surfaces are plastered and whitewashed, the corner stones and the pilaster strips and cornices crowned by vases are exposed to stone. The middle gable shows clear baroque forms.

The three-aisled nave is characterized by almost square pillars that support ridge vaults. Central nave and side aisles are almost the same height ( hall church ). The crossing is raised by a dome with a lantern .

Furnishing

The middle choir chapel (capilla mor) contains an altarpiece with figures and paintings ; the altars in the aisles are simpler. The church has two sermon pulpits .
