history
The Archdiocese of Braga was established as the Diocese of Braga in the 4th century . In the 12th century, the diocese of Braga was elevated to an archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Braga gave up on March 23, 1545 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Miranda . Further territorial assignments took place on April 20, 1922 to found the diocese of Vila Real and on November 3, 1977 to found the diocese of Viana do Castelo .
In May 2020, two archdiocese priests were charged with sexual abuse by the diocesan child protection commission. One of the priests had been a member of the diocesan curia shortly before the report, the other had already died at the time of the report. According to the archdiocese, both cases were statute-barred under church and criminal law; The archdiocese would report the living priest if he was notified of cases that were not yet statute-barred.
