The Diocese of Bragança-Miranda ( Latin Dioecesis Brigantiensis-Mirandensis , Portuguese Diocese de Bragança-Miranda ) is an in Portugal situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Bragança .

history

The diocese of Miranda was founded in 1545 at the instigation of King Joãos III. of Portugal by a decree of Pope Paul III. In 1770 the bishopric was moved to Bragança by Pope Clement XIV with the Apostolic Constitution Pastoris Aeterni and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Braga as a suffragan . On September 27, 1780, the diocese Bragança was by Pope Pius VI. renamed with the Apostolic Constitution Romanus Pontifex in the Diocese of Bragança and Miranda . The diocese of Bragança and Miranda gave up on April 20, 1922 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Vila Real . On May 27, 1996, the diocese of Bragança and Miranda was renamed the Diocese of Bragança-Miranda .
