The Roman Catholic Diocese of Viseu ( Latin Dioecesis Visensis , Portuguese Diocese de Viseu ) is in Portugal situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Viseu .
history
The diocese of Viseu was founded in 572 by Pope John III. established and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Mérida as a suffragan . As a result of the Islamic expansion , the diocese went under in 718. Since 1101 the diocese of Viseu was administered by the bishops of Coimbra and from 1120 it was subordinated to the archdiocese of Braga as a suffragan. In 1147 the diocese of Viseu could be rebuilt as a result of the Reconquista . On August 24, 1938, it gave up parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Aveiro .
