The Roman Catholic Diocese of Beja ( Latin Dioecesis Beiensis , Portuguese Diocese de Beja ) is in Portugal situated Roman Catholic diocese , based in the town of Beja in the region Alentejo .

history

Isolated sources suggest that there were bishops in Beja as early as late antiquity . From the 6th to 8th In the 19th century, other bishop names have been handed down. The modern diocese of Beja was established on July 10, 1770 by Pope Clement XIV as part of the Apostolic Constitution Agrum Universalis Ecclesiae from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Évora and subordinated to this as a suffragan diocese.
