Beja Cathedral
The apostle James d. Ä. Consecrated Cathedral of Beja ( Portuguese Sé Catedral de São Tiago Maior ) in the southern Portuguese city of Beja in the Alentejo is the seat of the diocese of Beja .
location
The cathedral is located in the center of the city just a few meters from the castle (Castelo de Beja) at a height of approx. 280 m .
history
The church was built around 1590 at the instigation of the then Archbishop of Évora , Teotónio de Bragança. However, the diocese of Beja was only established in 1770 by Pope Clement IV (new?). By a decree of the Holy See of November 14, 1925, the church was elevated to the rank of cathedral. The building was then restored and enlarged; his actual consecration as a cathedral took place on May 31, 1946.
architecture
The facade of the church is divided into three parts: on the ground floor there are three portals; Wall niches with figures are attached above the side portals . There is a window with a balustrade above the central portal ; the central gable and the lateral volutes tower above the roof surfaces. The interior of the three-aisled hall church impresses with its clarity and balance; the ribbed vault rests on slender columns without mediating capitals . Round windows are located above the unexposed side chapels with a shallow depth .
Furnishing
The choir has two bays; the walls are decorated with azulejos. The baroque main altar, made at the end of the 17th century by a Lisbon workshop, impresses with the delicacy of its execution and the sheen of its parts, among which the twisted “Solomonic” columns are particularly eye-catching.
