Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão (born November 10, 1922 in Lisbon , Portugal , † February 21, 2012 in Beja ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Beja .

Life

Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão initially studied mechanical engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico from 1939 to 1945 . He co-founded the Centro de Ação Social Universitária (CASU) and the university newspaper "Ala" of the Juventude Universitária Católica, Lisboa (JUC). After completing his mechanical engineering studies in 1945, he entered the seminary Seminário dos Olivais . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1951 by Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira . He was significantly involved in the reorganization of the Patriarchate of Lisbon and its chairman of the Preparatory Commission for the pastoral reorganization of the Patriarchate. In 1960 he became the private secretary of Cardinal Gonçalves Cerejeira; he accompanied him to the inauguration of Brasília in 1960 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 6, 1966 titular bishop of Thelepte and auxiliary bishop in the Patriarchate of Lisbon . The Patriarch of Lisbon, Manuel Cardinal Gonçalves Cerejeira, donated him episcopal ordination on January 22, 1967 ; Co- consecrators were António de Castro Xavier Monteiro , Bishop of Lamego , and António de Campos , Auxiliary Bishop in Lisbon. For nine years he was secretary of the Bishops 'Conference and its first delegate to the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE).

On February 26, 1977 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Beja and after Manuel Dos Santos Rocha's retirement he succeeded him as Bishop of Beja. He was involved in the Portuguese Bishops' Conference , especially pastoral care . In 1984 he founded the Departamento do Património Histórico e Artístico da Diocese de Beja (DPHA) , an institution for the protection of cultural assets in the Diocese of Beja.

On January 25, 1999, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
