Antonio de Castro Xavier Monteiro

António de Castro Xavier Monteiro (born December 1, 1919 in Airão , Guimarães district , Portugal ; † August 13, 2000 in Lamego , Portugal) was a Portuguese clergyman and bishop of Lamego from 1972 to 1995.

Live and act

Born in a small community, Monteiro was ordained a priest on August 15, 1942 . On February 22, 1964 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Vila Real in Portugal and titular bishop of Ombi . The episcopal ordination donated to him on May 3rd, 1964 Francisco Maria da Silva , Archbishop of Braga ; Co- consecrators were António Valente da Fonseca , Bishop of Vila Real, and Florentino de Andrade e Silva , Auxiliary Bishop in Porto . On February 3, 1966, he became auxiliary bishop in Lisbon and titular archbishop of Mitylene .

He was a participant in the Second Vatican Council . Pope Paul VI then appointed him on July 1, 1972 bishop of the diocese of Lamego in northern Portugal. He held this office until his retirement on January 5, 1995.

The retired Bishop of Lamego died on August 13, 2000 at the age of 80.

A street in Guimarães is named after him.
