Manuel Gonçalves Cardinal Cerejeira (born November 19, 1888 in Lousado , Portugal , † August 2, 1977 in Lisbon ) was Archbishop and Patriarch of Lisbon .

Life

Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira studied at the Braga Seminary and the Theological Faculty of the University of Coimbra . He received the sacrament of ordination on April 1, 1911 and then worked as a university lecturer in Coimbra.

In 1928 Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira was appointed titular archbishop of Mitylene and auxiliary bishop in Lisbon. He received the episcopal ordination on June 17, 1928 by the Bishop of Coimbra , Manuel Luís Coelho da Silva ; Co- consecrators were José Alves Correia da Silva , Bishop of Leiria , and António Antunes , Coadjutor Bishop of Coimbra. A year later Pope Pius XI appointed him . Archbishop and Patriarch of Lisbon and accepted him on December 19, 1929, at the age of 41, as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Marcellino e Pietro in the College of Cardinals .

As a papal legate , he represented both Pope Pius XI abroad. as well as the Popes Pius XII. and John XXIII. on several important occasions. In 1944 he inaugurated the cathedral of Lourenço Marques in Mozambique and in 1952 led the celebrations on the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of the death of St. Francis Xaverius in Goa, India . In 1960 he headed the papal delegation that traveled to South America for the inauguration of the new Brazilian capital, Brasília . In 1961 he was the longest serving cardinal priest Cardinal Protopriester .

Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira died on August 2, 1977 in Lisbon and found its final resting place in the patriarchal tomb of the church of São Vicente de Fora. He was the last remaining cardinal, who was led by Pope Pius XI. had been appointed.
