António I. Mendes Cardinal Bello (born June 18, 1842 in Gouveia , Portugal , † August 5, 1929 in Lisbon ) was Archbishop and Patriarch of Lisbon .

Life

António Mendes Belo studied the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy at the University of Coimbra and received on 10 June 1865, the sacrament of Holy Orders . At the age of only 23 he became vicar general of the diocese of Funchal and professor of theology at the seminary of Pinhel . From 1874 to 1881 he was vicar general of the Diocese of Pinhel, from 1881 of the Diocese of Aveiro . In 1881 he became vicar general of the Archdiocese of Lisbon .

In 1884 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . initially titular Archbishop of Mitylene and Auxiliary Bishop in Lisbon. He was ordained bishop on April 27, 1884 by the then Patriarch of Lisbon, José Sebastião Neto . In the same year he was appointed Bishop of Faro .

In 1907 António Mendes Bello became Patriarch of Lisbon. Pope Pius X appointed him in 1911 in pectore for Cardinal . The proclamation took place in 1914 and the admission as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Marcellino e Pietro in the college of cardinals took place on May 25, 1914. From 1911 to 1913 António Mendes Bello had to leave his diocese because there were disputes between the Church and the State of Portugal. In 1922 Cardinal Bello became a member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences.

António Mendes Bello died on August 5, 1929 in Lisbon and was buried in the São Vicente de Fora church.
