José Sebastião Cardinal Neto O.FMDisc. (* February 8, 1841 in Fargo , Portugal ; † December 7, 1920 in Villarino , Seville , Spain ) was the twelfth Patriarch of Lisbon .

Life

José Sebastião Neto received after his theological and philosophical training at the seminary of the diocese of Faro on September 20, 1862 the ordination as subdeacon and on May 21, 1864 as deacon . He was ordained a priest on April 1, 1865 . In 1875 he joined the order of the Franciscan Discalceaten ; here he took the religious name Joseph of the Sacred Heart .

In 1879 José Sebastião Neto was elected Bishop of Angola and Congo . He was ordained bishop on April 11, 1880, by the Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal, Gaetano Aloisi Masella . He then became Patriarch of Lisbon (1883-1907). On March 24, 1884, Pope Leo XIII. the just 43-year-old patriarch cardinalate and appointed him cardinal priest of Santi XII Apostoli in June 1886 . In 1903 Neto took part in the conclave for the election of Pope Pius X and in 1914 in the conclave for the election of Pope Benedict XV. part.

In November 1907 he gave up his office and moved to a Franciscan convent. Here he wanted to spend his old age. In 1910 he went into exile in Seville , Spain, due to religious persecution in Portugal .

Cardinal Neto died on December 7, 1920 near Seville.
